From 1939 to 1950, only eight teams were chosen to play for a national championship. The field was expanded to 16 teams in 1951 and 1952 and then varied between 22 and 25 teams between 1953 and 1974. In 1975, the field was expanded to 32 teams. In 1979, the year when Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s Michigan State Spartans beat Larry Bird’s Indiana State Sycamores in the national final, the tournament featured 40 teams. One year later, the field was expanded to 48.
In 1983, the NCAA tried 52 teams. Four play-in games were played prior to the 48-team tournament. A year later, a fifth play-in game was added for a total of 53 teams. Finally in 1985, a 64-team tournament became a reality. The 64-team format was kept through the 2000 season. From 2001 to 2010, the tournament field was made up of 65 teams. In 2011, the current system of 68 teams and four play-in games was put into effect.
