Super Bowl XLVII Predictions
Baltimore Ravens vs. San Francisco 49ers

It will be billed as the Battle of the Brothers, the first time siblings have coached against each other in the NFL’s championship game, but above all else, it will be a match up of two very similar football teams.

The brothers Harbaugh, Jim and John, learned the basics of the game from their father, Jack, a long-time football coach, who impressed upon his sons the importance of defense and running the football. A look at the NFL statistics proves the sons got the message loud and clear. Two of the better defenses in the league, the 49ers yield just 17.1 points per game and the Ravens, who at one point late in the season were under 20 ppg, give up 21.5.

Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers were fourth in the NFL in rushing averaging 155.7 yards per game led by RB Frank Gore who rushed for 1,214 yards on 254 carries. As important as a running game is, both Harbaughs also learned that the ability to stop the run is equally valuable. The 49ers allowed opponents just 94 rushing yards per game and finished third in the NFL in total defense.

John Harbaugh’s Ravens, while not as impressive, still finished in the upper half of the league in rushing yards per game (118.8) led by Ray Rice (1,143 yards) and gave up 123 rushing yards per game in the pass-happy NFL.

The other major story is, of course, Ravens’ linebacker Ray Lewis who will play the final game of his 17-year NFL career in the Super Bowl. And you can bet his teammates and the Ravens’ organization would like to see their star leave the game on top. It’s almost as if a Ravens’ win is destiny.

Baltimore beat Indianapolis, 24-9, in the wildcard round and then, thanks to a 70-yard last-minute TD pass from QB Joe Flacco to WR Jacoby Jones, were able to defeat Denver, 38-35, in double overtime. In the AFC championship, the Ravens fell behind, 13-0, in the first half, but again found a way and beat New England, 28-13.

The major difficulty for the Ravens will be a 49ers offense that has averaged 476 yards per game (including 236 on the ground) in the postseason. The San Francisco offense starts with QB Colin Kaepernick who replaced Alex Smith midway through the season. Smith had led the 49ers to the NFC title game a year ago, but Kaepernick has provided another dimension to the San Francisco offense with his legs.

In the 45-31 victory over Green Bay, Kaepernick broke an NFL record for quarterbacks rushing for 181 yards and completely demoralized the Packers’ defense. It will be imperative that the older brother John’s Raven defense keep Kaepernick contained. In the NFC championship game, the Atlanta Falcons’ defense was content to let the former Nevada QB hand the ball off on the zone read play. The zone read has been the play that Kaepernick has torched defenses on and it will be up to Lewis and the Baltimore defense to stop it if they wish to be successful.

With two strong defenses and two powerful running games, it just may be the passing game that will make a difference in the Super Bowl XLVII. San Francisco WR Michael Crabtree and TE Vernon Davis provide Kaepernick with formidable targets against a Ravens’ pass defense that can be vulnerable at times. On the other side, Ravens’ QB Joe Flacco has had a season to remember and wide receivers Jacoby Jones, Anquan Boldin, and Torrey Smith provide ample targets. Flacco’s late TD against Denver and three second-half TD passes against New England prove that the Baltimore passing game cannot be overlooked by the 49ers defense.

All in all, this should be one of the most entertaining Super Bowls in recent history. Two equally matched teams coached by siblings, each having found a way to get to New Orleans. A storied franchise with five Super Bowl victories and another with its lone Super Bowl win over a decade ago. One of the league’s most renowned players in his final game--anything can happen…Baltimore 24, San Francisco 23.
